Working a Matter

Communications

The Communications section is a single, unified log of every email and SMS on a matter — inbound and outbound — so all correspondence lives with the file rather than scattered across inboxes and phones.

The Communications log — email and SMS together, with direction arrows.

The communications log

Messages are shown in Date, From, To, Subject and Message columns. An icon distinguishes email from SMS, and coloured arrows show the direction — outbound (sent) or inbound (received). The most recent messages also appear in the Recent Emails panel on the matter Overview. Click any row to open the message in full.

Composing an email

Click New Email (or + New → Email in the header) to open the compose view. The fastest way to start is to pick a Template: templates fill in the recipients, subject and body automatically, merging in the matter's data and mapping the right roles to their contact emails.

Composing an email — start from a template, then edit recipients, subject and body.

From there you can:

  • Edit the To, Cc and Bcc recipients, subject and body — the body is a rich-text editor and includes your signature.
  • Attach a generated Document, an existing File, or an Invoice.
  • Send the email, or Download .eml to save a draft copy.

Templates are set up per matter type — see Templates — and email sending is configured in Email & SMS settings.

Viewing and replying

Click an email in the log to read it in full, with its From, To and timestamp headers and the complete body. From here you can Reply or Download .eml.

Viewing an email — read the full message, then reply or download it.

Choosing Reply opens the compose view with the subject prefixed Re: and the original message quoted below. Type your reply above the quoted text and send.

Replying — your response goes above the quoted original.

Sending an SMS

Click New SMS (or + New → SMS) to text a matter contact. As with email, you can start from an SMS template, which fills in the message and the recipient's phone number. Edit the recipients and message as needed — a live character count helps you keep it short — then Send. Your organisation's SMS signature is added automatically.

Sending an SMS — pick a template or write the message, then send.

Note

SMS requires your firm's messaging to be set up in Email & SMS settings. Every message you send or receive is kept in this log and in the matter Timeline.
