Working a Matter

Timeline

The Timeline is a single, chronological record of everything that has happened on a matter — step changes, documents, correspondence, field updates, notes and tasks — so you can see the whole story at a glance.

The Timeline groups activity by date, with a time stamp and the person responsible for each entry.

What the Timeline shows

Open the Timeline tab to see the matter's activity in reverse date order, most recent first, grouped under each day. Every entry is time-stamped and shows who was responsible. Between them, these entries capture the key moments in a matter's life, including:

  • Step changes — when the matter moved from one workflow step to another.
  • Documents added — files generated or uploaded to the matter.
  • Field updates — changes to key data such as a priority or filing date.
  • File notes added — notes recorded against the matter.
  • Tasks added and completed — work items as they're created and finished.
  • Automations — actions taken automatically on the matter.

Why it's useful

Because the Timeline pulls all of this together in one place, it's the fastest way to catch up on a matter you haven't touched in a while, to confirm exactly when something happened, or to see who did what. Rather than opening the tasks, documents and correspondence panels one by one, you can scroll a single history.

Tip

To see just how a matter has progressed through its workflow, hover the step breadcrumb at the top of the matter screen — see Steps. The Timeline records those step changes alongside everything else.
