Working a Matter

Documents

The Documents panel holds every file stored against a matter — letters, specifications, instructions and anything you upload. From here you can generate polished documents from your firm's templates with the matter's data merged in, or drop in files of your own.

The Documents panel lists every file on the matter, with its type, date, size and who added it.

The documents list

Open the Documents tab to see everything filed against the matter. Each row shows the file name, its type (PDF, DOCX and so on), the date it was added, who uploaded it and its size. Click any row to open or download that document.

Generating a document from a template

Rather than writing routine correspondence from scratch, generate it from one of your matter type's templates. The template already contains the standard wording, and Cadence IP fills in the matter's details — names, dates, references and other field values — automatically.

Click + Generate to open the generator.

Pick a template and output format, then choose what to do with the finished document.
  • Template — choose from the templates enabled for this matter type, such as a demand letter or filing instructions.
  • Output Format — generate a PDF for a final, fixed document, or a DOCX when you need to keep editing in Word.

Then decide what happens with the result:

  • Edit — open the document in the built-in editor to make changes before you save it.
  • Download — save a copy to your computer without storing it on the matter.
  • Store — file the finished document on the matter so it appears in the list above.
  • Email — start a new email with the document already attached, ready to send to a contact.

Tip

Templates are defined per matter type. To add or change the documents available here, see Templates.

Uploading your own files

To add a file that wasn't generated from a template, simply drag and drop it anywhere onto the Documents page. Cadence IP uploads it and files it against the matter straight away. This is the quickest way to bring in incoming correspondence, scanned documents or drafts from elsewhere.

Where documents are physically stored — and whether they sync to your firm's own file system — is controlled organisation-wide. See File System settings for details.
